My Luxe Way to Soothe and Protect My Eyes from Screen Strain
We live in a world where our screens follow us everywhere—from morning emails to late-night scrolls. But while technology connects us, it can also leave our eyes looking tired and feeling strained. I believe beauty is more than skincare and makeup—it’s how we care for ourselves daily. Protecting our eyes isn’t just health advice; it’s a beauty ritual that keeps our gaze bright, fresh, and effortlessly radiant. After all, when your eyes sparkle, everything else follows.
Why Eye Care = Glow Care
Digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, if you want to be fancy, is a common condition resulting from prolonged use of digital devices (computers, tablets, smartphones). It's not a disease but a collection of eye and vision-related problems. The discomfort and symptoms that one feels are caused by the unique visual demands of screen use.
Why Digital Screens are Harder on Our Eyes
Staring at a digital screen is more taxing on our eyes than reading a printed page for several reasons:
- We blink less. We need frequent blinking to keep our eyes moist and refreshed. Less blinking = dry, irritated eyes.
- Constant focusing: The text and images on a digital screen are made up of pixels, which are not as sharply defined as printed text, so our eyes need to constantly work to focus and refocus, which leads to muscle fatigue.
- Glare and contrast: You already know this, that's why you probably have special screen glasses if your work involves a lot of screentime. Screens have glare and reflections, and usually, the contrast between the text and background is not ideal, so it's harder for our eyes to read and process the information.
- Screen distance and angle: Admit it, more often that not, you view your screens at a weird angle and are either too close to it or too far. This position is often different from, say, when we read a book. This, again, puts strain on our eyes and even lead to poor posture.
Glow isn’t just highlighter—it’s how alive and awake your eyes look.
Common Symptoms
Some common symptoms of digital eye strain are:
- Eye fatigue, soreness, and discomfort
- Dry, itchy, or burning eyes
- Blurred or double vision
- Headaches
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Neck, shoulder, or back pain (often due to poor posture while using a device)
When your eyes look tired, it shows up in your glow. It’s like your glow dims, even if your makeup is flawless.
The 20-20-20 Rule (Glow-Friendly Version)
This is a very simple self-care ritual you can do if you're like me and glued to the screen for hours and hours daily.
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps relieve eye discomfort and give you a break from your screen and intense focus.
I do this with a pomodoro timer. There are also lots of cute reminder apps to help you give your eyes a break, too. If you don't want to install more apps in your phone, just set an alarm every 20 minutes with a gentle chime tone.
Think of this as a reset ritual, like a mini spa break for your eyes. Think of it as a glow reset button you can press anywhere—yes, even in a Zoom meeting.
3. The Luxe Touch: Eye Steam Mask
At the end of the day, I use one of these steam eye masks from Mumuso. I don't use them daily, only 2-3x a week or on days when my eyes are especially fatigued.
I use steam as a self-care ritual, not just therapy.
I apply the mask and take 15 minutes lying down, usually listening to classical music or lo-fi beats or the background theme of whatever it is my son is playing on his Nintendo Switch. He's not allowed to talk to me during these 15 minutes.
It's not only a reset for my eyes, but for my mind and whole body. It definitely feels like a beauty treatment at home, like my sheet mask days. The difference is, this time, the treatment is for your eyes—the part of your face people connect with first.
🌿 Health Benefits of a Steam Eye Mask
Improved Circulation: The gentle warmth from the self-heating mask encourages blood flow around the eyes, reducing tension and relieving fatigue.
Dry Eye Relief: Steam helps hydrate and soothe tired eyes, perfect for those who spend long hours on computers or phones.
Relaxed Muscles: The warmth eases the tiny muscles around the eyes that tense up during screen use, helping prevent headaches and eye strain.
✨ Beauty Benefits
Reduces Puffiness: Improved circulation can help minimize morning puffiness or swelling after a long day.
Brightens Tired Eyes: With regular use, the mask helps refresh the delicate under-eye area, making you look more awake and radiant.
Prevents Premature Wrinkles: Relaxing the eye muscles helps reduce squinting and tension that can deepen fine lines over time. Consider it a tiny time machine for your under-eyes.
Beauty ritual: Makes eye cream or serum work even better afterwards since your skin is warmed and more receptive.
Mental Health
Relaxation cue: The warmth triggers your body to unwind, helping you slip into a calm, spa-like state (and even sleep better).
Daily reset: More than just skincare, it feels like pressing pause — giving yourself a moment of care before jumping into the next task.
I'd like to try this before bed time, but I keep forgetting! This will be a good wind down for me after my skincare routine.

Gentle Eye Rituals (Not Just Exercises)
Here are more eye rituals that I do to maintain good eye health.
Palming
Palming is like a warm hug for your eyes. Rub your hands together briskly to create warmth then close your eyes and put your hands over your eyes with your fingers up, touching your forehead. Enjoy this warmth. When you're ready, remove your hands and gently open your eyes. This is a great exercise to do if you don't have a steam eye mask.
Eye rolling / focus shifting
These are like morning stretches, but for vision. Slowly roll your eyes in one full circle in one direction for 5x. Then do it on the other direction. I also sometimes look left to right and up and down for added muscle relaxation.
Blue Light Protection = Modern Beauty Hack
For me, blue light filters or glasses are must-haves. They are not only functional, but serve as a fashion accessory.
I need to buy a new pair soon as my bluelight glasses have grade, but my eyes have improved a lot, so I don't use them anymore.
A quick note for sensitive Glow Ladies like me, you may want to look for hypoallergenic frames. I get glasses-shaped rashes when I wear my glasses for a long time. Your glasses should flatter your face, not fight your skin.
Screen settings
I don't like very bright screens. My son doesn't too, and even has his screens at the darkest setting. I curate my digital lighting just like I would my vanity mirror. It’s part health, part aesthetic—because glow is in the details.
Protecting your eyes now means less puffiness, fewer dark circles, and more natural radiance later.
Nutrition & Hydration for Glow
As an internationally certified health, wellness, nutrition, and body healing coach, of course I have to talk about nutrition!
We all know that carrots are good for our eyes, right? But did you know that leafy greens, citrus fruits, and fatty fish like salmon and mackerel give you that inner glow, too?
And of course, water! Hydration = plump skin + bright eyes. Every sip is a beauty treatment in disguise.
