This Season is All About Me (And I Won't Apologize for It): Things I've Been Doing to Invest in Myself

For years, I poured everything into everyone else—my child, my home, my work. I put myself last. And I told myself that was noble. But I’ve realized that self-sacrifice without self-care leads to burnout, not sainthood. The truth? You can’t pour from an empty cup. When I flipped the switch, I started pouring into myself. I started investing in myself. I no longer feel guilty if I use my money to buy things for myself, things that I need and things that make me happy.  I no longer feel guilty if I come home hands full of shopping bags and wasn't able to buy anything for my son. For years, I always made sure that I got my son   pasalubong  (homecoming gift) whenever I went out. Now, I no longer feel guilty if mom got stuff and he didn't. That doesn’t mean I love him less—it means I’m learning to love myself more, too. Here are some things I’ve been doing to invest in myself. These are more than purchases—they’re little promises I keep to myself. 💧 A Tumble...

How Do I Get a Clear Face?

Is a question that I've been asked several times over the years by clients and friends. Not to brag, but many professional MUAs are impressed by the quality of my skin even at my age. I was not immune to the occasional acne when I was a teenager. I didn't have a solid skin care regimen until I was in my 20's. I guess it's a combination of genes, good research. good products and luck that got me this far. But, you don't have to rely on luck to get a clear face. Today, I will share with you some tips to get a clean, clear, beautiful face. Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize I cannot emphasize this enough! I am still surprised that many of my clients don't do any of these steps. I usually ask a client about their skin care routine before I start working on their face and many (about 98%) say that they don't do anything, just shower in the morning then go. Some use body soap on their face while some use a facial wash. You need to find a good cleanser that will g...

Dealing with Rough Skin

I have 3 problem areas that are always dry and rough – my elbows, knees and heels. I think most of you have the same problem as well. It doesn’t help that I had a lot of wounds and bruises when I was a kid in these areas as I was always out playing on the streets. When I got older, I still had a lot of wounds due to my sports. My elbows and knees were really battered and bruised.  I’d like to share with you what I do to get rid of rough skin. Elbows I always apply lotion right after I take a bath. I have no particular lotion for my elbows. I just apply whatever body lotion I’m using at the moment. I also scrub them twice a week. I use this: After washing my hands, I apply lotion to my hands and elbows. I don’t forget this step. Last year, I had really rough, patchy elbows and I made sure to apply lotion throughout the day after washing my hands. This is my current hand lotion: If you like resting your elbows on your desk, avoid this practice as much as possible...

My Must-Have Products for Women in Their 20’s

I have a lot of student readers and women in their 20’s who follow my blog. I made a similar post for women in their 30’s and I think it’s only appropriate that I address the younger ones. So, here are my must-have products for you 20 something ladies. Anti-aging It’s never too early to start taking care of your skin. You want to slow down the effects of aging as early as you can and as much as you can so the 20’s is the perfect time to do this. It’s more of prevention at this stage. Some anti-aging products might be too harsh for your young skin so be sure to test them out first. I’m 31 and I still can’t tolerate anti-aging products so I use them in moderation. Exfoliating Scrubs Get rid of all those dead skin cells on your face and body to make your youthful glow last. Hair tools It’s also important that you invest in hair tools as this is the time in your life when parties abound. You also get to be invited to a lot of weddings, social functions, etc. so you need to ...

Quick Beauty Fixes when You’re Sick

I’m not in my best condition health-wise but that is not an excuse to look like crap. Whenever I’m sick, I always make it a point to look as good as I can. I’m not saying that I get all dolled up while confined in bed. What I mean is I don’t neglect my beauty routine even when I’m on house arrest or have attacks. I especially don’t skip my beauty routine when I only have some cough and colds and I still need to go out to work. But, I do change my routine a bit depending on my strength and condition. Here are a few beauty quick fixes I do: Facial Mist Instead of a moisturizer, I use a facial mist. It cools off my face and neck and does not give me that heavy feeling that moisturizers give. If you have a fever, choose cooling facial mists that have skin smoothing ingredients. If you can’t find a cooling mist, put the bottle in the ref for maximum relief. This will also prevent your skin from getting blotchy. Shampoo My doctor tells me to take a shower whenever I have a fever. T...

How I Deal with My Dry Skin

I’ve been dealing with dry skin my whole life but it seems that it took a turn for the worse this year. This is how my forearm looks like: I actually sharpened the image so you can clearly see the “scales”. Believe it or not, this actually looks better now compared to last week and the weeks before that.  Here are my personal tips on dealing with dry skin. Hydrate It’s very important that you keep yourself hydrated with water especially during summer. I drink about 3 liters or more of water each day and it’s still not enough so my doctor put me on a Gatorade diet. Aside from water and juices, I drink 1 glass of Gatorade daily. Use gentle bath products Avoid strong scents. If you can get an unscented product, do so. I personally can’t use unscented products as I really want my bath products to have even a bit of fragrance in them. I think Dove beauty bars and shower creams are the best for dry skin. I especially love this shower cream because it really helped the condi...
