From the Editor’s Desk: What Makes Me Feel Alive

Dear Glow Girls, Thank you for being on this journey with me starting with  Issue 01: Background Noise Issue 02: Beautiful Things And now we’re here, Issue 03: Fun & Flirty. The past few months have been an emotional journey for me.  It still is.  After being treated like background noise, discovering beautiful things again, I now ask this question - What makes me feel alive again? For the past two months, it’s painting.  I’ve always been an artist, but painting is different.  I’ve dabbled with jewelry design and making and other forms of art, but I’ve never considered myself a brush artist.  My son is.  And I remember watching him during his painting lessons and wishing I could hold the brush, too. It took many years to find the courage to hold a brush.  I didn’t know why.  I still don’t know why I was so scared to just paint.  Today, I can produce 4 paintings in one afternoon.  And I find pleasure in admiring my work af...

I Have a Tote for Every Kind of Day

I have a tote for every kind of day. Apparently. I didn’t intentionally create a tote system. It just happened. There are days when I know I’m going to be out for hours. There are piano days. There are long mall days when I want enough space for everything I might need, plus whatever inevitably comes home with me.  And I’m a mom. I like being prepared.  And then there are days when I’m just popping into a few stores. Those days get this bag. It’s small, pink, ridiculously cute, and has a chubby cat drinking coffee on the front. Obviously, I bought it. But despite its size, it carries a surprising amount of stuff. The bag changes. The system doesn’t. If you’ve seen my other What’s in My Bag posts, you already know that I like pouches. Lots of pouches. Pouches inside bags. Smaller pouches inside bigger pouches. Things grouped according to purpose because apparently my ADHD brain would like my belongings filed into tiny portable departments. I call it my Matryoshka Pouch ...

I Don’t Carry the Same Bag Anymore

Glow Girls already know I’m a tote girl. I almost always have one hanging from my shoulder, usually carrying far more tiny pouches than any reasonable woman should need. 😆 But I realized recently that I don’t carry the same tote anymore. I used to have The Tote . 😏 Now, apparently, I have a bag for the kind of day I’m having. This one is my piano-day bag. My son’s piano days mean a short trip to the mall, a little waiting around, maybe a few errands, maybe something to eat, and then home. I don’t need to bring half my life with me. And, the rainy season has started. So it’s much cooler now.  But I still have to bring some of our anti-heat things.  These are my usual things But this is still a lot less than my summer tote .  And maybe that’s the real change. I used to pack for everything that might happen. Now I pack for the day I’m actually going to have. It helps that the season has changed.  So, I guess I pack for the day I’m actually going to have in th...

Pretty…But Painful

I have a pair of Charles & Keith sandals that I still think are pretty. That’s probably why they’ve survived this long. They’ve been with me for years.  They’re a soft blush pink, delicate without being overly feminine, with thin straps that wrap around the foot in that effortless-looking way that is never actually effortless to put on. They still look good. They’re still wearable. There is technically nothing wrong with them. Except they hurt. Not immediately, of course. That would make the decision much easier. For the first few minutes, they’re perfectly fine. I can walk around in them. I can look down at my feet and think, See? They’re still good. Then I walk a little farther. And the straps start making themselves known. A little pressure here. A little rubbing there. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that would make me stop in the middle of the mall and dramatically fling my shoes into a trash bin. Just enough discomfort to make me aware of my feet. And once...
