I Left With Nothing, and That Changed Everything

There was a time when walking into places like this felt dangerous.

Not because of the price…
but because I wanted everything.

Muji SM North is huge. I’m always excited to explore this branch. They have clothes, bags, toiletries, and homeware that I don’t usually see in my regular branch.

I immediately found something useful when we went into the store. I got it and proceeded to get a cart.

I was excited to explore!

Of course,  I saw these hard cases again! I was determined to buy one this time, but I couldn’t even open it to see the inside. I wanted to see what could fit in it, how I would use it, and what role it will have in my life.

Then I looked closer and the display was already dirty.

And the spell broke.

At first glance, these Muji hard cases looked like the kind of thing my future self would own.

Clean. Minimal.

The kind of object that photographs beautifully beside and iPad and a strawberry smoothie.

But then reality entered the room:
  • The display units were already dirty
  • I couldn’t’ even inspect the inside properly
  • The material didn’t feel elevated enough
And more importantly, I didn’t have a use for it because I can’t properly see the whole thing.

“I realized I no longer buy things just because they fit an aesthetic version of me.”

So I moved on.

I’m always drawn to bags, especially now that we’re traveling again.

But nothing felt like the one.

Muji was filled with lots of different items. We went around to look at them, admire them, inspect them.

That vast space was filled with beautiful things, just not something that I wanted or needed that time.

I entered the store with a cart in my hands, and one item that promised the possibility of more.

But I found myself quietly returning the one item I was holding onto, putting the cart back… and stepping out of the store with my son’s hand in mine.

I used to leave places like this with full hands.
Today, I left with something else entirely.

Clarity.
