On Dressing for the Heat Without Disappearing

 It was 35°C.

I was talking to a friend and he asked me what’s up with me that day, like what I have planned. I said groceries and shopping. Then I said I was thinking what to wear to the grocery store because I was already melting and hadn’t even left the house.

He said, “Shorts. Oversized shirt. Tie your hair up.” He said, just house clothes.

Practical. Efficient. Logical. Also sweet and caring because he knows about my heat sensitivity.

I stared at my closet.

I could do that.

But I didn’t want to.

Not because there’s anything wrong with comfort. I love comfort. I live in it. Comfort, for me, should include feeling like myself. I don’t like feeling accidental.

Even when I’m just buying groceries.

So I compromised with the heat, not with my style.

Light blouse.

Structured shorts.

Hair half-up with a bow so it stays off my neck but still feels like me.

Comfortable.

Breathable.

Aligned.

The heat makes everything feel negotiable — effort, polish, intention. But I’ve learned that how I dress affects how I move. And I prefer to move through even the most ordinary places feeling like myself.

Not only that, it affects how I feel. They say to set your intention for the day. And I feel that how I look affects the kind of energy that I want to attract that day.

We were out for a whole afternoon of shopping at Landers, Mitsukoshi, and S&R.

Fluorescent lights.

People rushing.

Carts rolling.

Cold air conditioning.

But I walked slowly. Comfortable. Present. Unbothered by the temperature or the tempo.

We went home that night with me feeling accomplished and composed. It felt like I beat the heat without giving up something I love, something I’m used to.

Comfort looks different for everyone. For me, it’s breathable fabrics, a pulled-together silhouette, and the quiet confidence of feeling like myself—even in 35°C, even under fluorescent grocery lights.
