I’m Throwing These Away Tonight
They looked fine.
Still soft.
Still clean.
Still part of my routine.
Some of them were even new. Freshly washed. Air-dried. Ready to be used again.
Until I saw it.
Tiny black spots.
Subtle. Easy to ignore. The kind you could convince yourself is just a stain… or nothing at all.
But it wasn’t nothing.
And that’s the scary part.
Because what you see on the surface?
That’s usually the last stage.
By the way, I just washed those 2 puffs I’m holding in the photo. They were also air-dried.
I’ve been using marshmallow and cloud puffs for a couple of months now. I stopped using regular sponges because they’re not compatible with my very sensitive and reactive skin.
I thought these puffs last longer than traditional sponges but boy, was I wrong.
What You Don’t See
Makeup puffs and sponges are soft, absorbent, and constantly exposed to moisture.
And where there’s moisture…
There’s growth.
Even if you:
- wash them
- air dry them
- take care of them
Sometimes, what’s happening inside doesn’t show right away.
Until it does.
Those black spots?
They’re not just “marks.”
They’re a sign that something has already settled in.
And once it’s there?
No amount of washing will bring it back to safe.
Why I’m Letting Them Go
This is the part we don’t talk about enough.
We hold on to things because:
- they still feel okay
- they still work
- we just bought them
So we think:
“Such a waste.”
“It’s still usable.”
“I just cleaned this.”
But your skin doesn’t care about any of that.
What touches your face matters.
And tools like these?
They sit directly on your skin. Pressed in. Blending. Absorbing.
If something isn’t right…
It goes straight where it shouldn’t.
Signs It’s Time to Throw Them Away
Even if they look okay at first glance, pay attention to:
- Dark spots or discoloration that weren’t there before
- Smell — even faint, even after washing
- Texture changes — too soft, too dense, or not bouncing back
- Persistent stains that don’t come out
And most importantly?
That feeling that something is… off.
Trust that.
But These Are New…
Yes.
Some of mine are.
And that’s exactly why this matters.
Because this isn’t just about “old” tools.
It’s about:
- how they’re stored
- how they’re dried
- how moisture lingers where you can’t see
Sometimes, by the time it shows…
It’s already been there for a while.
I was already suspecting mold, but asked my knowledgeable friend for confirmation. He asked questions then I decided to just show him. He said, “Yeah. Those are molds. Throw them away this instant! Don’t touch your face. Wash your hands now!” He knows I have lots of sensitivities.
So I’m Throwing These Away Tonight
No hesitation.
No “maybe I can still use it.”
No trying to save something that shouldn’t be saved.
Because soft skin doesn’t come from holding on too long.
It comes from knowing when to let things go.
