The Power of Being Selective

I used to think being open was a strength.

Saying yes.
Responding quickly.
Giving people the benefit of the doubt.

Letting things in…
just to see what they could become.

And for a while,
it felt right.

Expansive.
Generous.
Kind.

Until I noticed something.

The more I let in,
the more I had to sort through.

Noise.
Energy.
Expectations that weren’t mine.

I had to give more of my time, resources to people who don’t even bother extending common courtesy, decency, and respect.

At first I brushed it off. Thought maybe they just forgot. Or are going through something.

But it kept happening over and over again.

And it was becoming a cycle.

A vicious cycle that I kept getting sucked in.

But then I realized…

Not everything that reaches me

is meant for me.

Not every opportunity is aligned.
Not every person deserves access.
Not every voice deserves space in my mind.

So I changed.

Not dramatically.
Not loudly.

Just… deliberately.

I started pausing
before I said yes.

Started asking myself:

“Does this genuinely make me happy or am I just pleasing the other person?”

“Does it feel right to help or is it out of guilt and obligation?”

“Does this feel right…
or just familiar?”

Because there’s a difference.

Familiar feels easy.
Aligned feels… quiet.

Clear.

I stopped collecting things
that didn’t fit the life I’m building.

Stopped entertaining conversations
that drained more than they gave.

Stopped giving attention
just because something or someone asked for it.

Now…

I don’t take everything in.

I observe.
I filter.
I choose.

And sometimes that means:

Walking away from things
that look good on the surface.

Saying no
without explaining why.

Letting things pass
without chasing them.

Not because I’m closed.

But because I’m clear.

Selective isn’t selfish.

It’s refined.

It’s knowing that my time,

my energy,

my attention…

are not unlimited.

So I stopped spending them
like they are.

And the beautiful part?

When I become selective…

what remains
actually fits.

Not forced.
Not adjusted.
Not explained.

Just…

right.
